Wastewater surveillance is a useful and cost-efficient method to collect information and tackle diseases as well as land-based sources of pollution early.
With the support of the European Commission Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority, UN Environment, together with the World Health Organization, the International Livestock Research Institute, the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, is implementing the Wastewater Surveillance for Africa Initiative to establish wastewater surveillance programmes across the continent. The initiative aims to reduce wastewater and nutrient pollution, lower risks to ecosystems and human health, strengthen preparedness for future pandemics, and improve socio-economic and environmental conditions under a One Health approach.
