Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) plays a vital role in protecting Dutch cities from growing societal challenges and the increasing threats of climate change. However, despite its importance, the condition of these systems is often overlooked by asset managers — a neglect that can lead to premature failures and accelerated degradation.
This presentation explores the vulnerabilities of one of the most widely implemented BGI systems in the Netherlands — the bioswale (or wadi) — by tracing its potential failure mechanisms throughout its entire life cycle. The investigation is based on an extensive literature review and on-site inspections.
